The recording of Haydn's 83rd symphony was first issued by HMV in 1950. The 96th was issued in 1952. The 88th symphony was issued for the first time on this CD in 1995.Listening to these performances it is baffling why one of these symphonies was unissued for so long. Here Haydn - one of Sir John's favourites - takes on a liveliness which reminds the listener almost of Jazz!This is inviting, involving music. The melodic lines are given clarity and grace. The playing is elegant without being pompous.
